City breathes life into ECD safety

The Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department is facilitating First Aid training for more than 400 ECD practitioners, as part of its efforts to capacitate early learning centres, and promote child safety. Read more below:
First Aid training is one of the requirements for compliance for Early Childhood Development Centres.
Between February and April this year, the City's Social Development & Early Childhood Development Department (SD&ECD) is facilitating First Aid Level 1 training for 420 persons working in the ECD sector.
The participants were selected by their local ECD forums and came from areas around the metropole.
The two-day training course helps participants understand various aspects of first aid.
This includes how to assess and manage different types of injuries and common medical emergencies, and how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
The SD&ECD is also distributing first aid kits to all of the ECDs represented at the training to ensure practical application, should the need arise.
'ECDs are a home away from home for thousands of young children in our city, and it is important that their safety be prioritised. While the primary goal should be to avoid injuries, being prepared in the event that something does happen, is crucial, and that is what's driving this initiative. Apart from first aid training, the City also facilitates business and financial management training to ECDs, and guides them on compliance so that they are able to register their facilities with the provincial government,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
